\n
\nOpportunity #1:
\nA few weeks ago, each of you made powerpoint presentations about a different battle or general from the Civil War. During these presentations you were asked to take notes on your classmates' projects. To receive a point of extra credit, you must submit to me the notes that you took from the presentations, which should be in the format that I outlined on the board prior to the presentations.
\n-->DUE WEDNESDAY, APRIl 13th<--
\n
\nOpportunity #2:
\nBelow is a link that will take you to an article from the Philadelphia Inquirer regarding the Civil War. Copy and paste the link into the address bar and read the article. Upon completion of the article, write a concise (2 paragraphs) analysis of the article. The first paragraph should be a brief summary of the article, and the second paragraph should be your own opinion on whether or not you agree with the author's argument. Be sure to support your writing with concrete examples from the article.

We also discussed the Supreme Court and the its role interpreting the Constitution. Please read the following background information about the Texas v. Johnson case and answer the 6 questions at the bottom of the page. Your answers should be handed in on a separate piece of paper. This is due by 1\/21 to receive extra credit.

\n
\n1.What did Gregory Johnson do? What happened to him as a result?
\n-Gregory Lee Johnson took part in a demonstration protesting against nuclear weapons among other things. He was carrying an American Flag. Johnson then poured kerosene on the flag and set it on fire. "Johnson was arrested. He was charged with violating a Texas law that said people couldn't vandalize a respected object. He was convicted, sentenced to one year in prison, and fined $2,000."
\n
\n2.What does the First Amendment say about freedom of speech? Why did Johnson say his First Amendment rights had been violated?
\n-The First Amendment says that protection of free speech included "symbolic speech," which is an action that expresses an idea. Johnson said his First Amendment rights had been violated because burning the flag was a form of symbolic speech and he could not be punished.
\n
\n3.What argument could you make that flag burning is likely to cause violence and therefore should be against the law?
\n-The argument you could make is that by the burning of the flag it's likely to cause violence and cause wars. There could be religious issues.
\n
\n4.What argument could you make that flag burning is symbolic speech protected by the First Amendment?
\n-The argument you could make against the flag burning as a symbolic speech is that by burning the flag it not harming anyone. You can still believe what you still believe, and not let that affect you.
\n
\n5.The Texas Court of Appeals said the government cannot "carve out a symbol of unity and prescribe a set of approved messages to be associated with that symbol . . . " What does this mean? Do you agree that the government should not be able to do this? List your reasons.
\n-This means you can't say one thing, then switch it around and say the other. If you say that the burning of the flag is symbolic and that's a protected right, it's wrong to accuse someone of breaking an admendment.
\n
\n6.How should the Supreme Court of the United States decide this case? Why?
\n-The Supreme Court of the United States should decide this case by making accusations and then going from there. By making an accusation it's a likely thing that you could find out the honesty and what should be held accountable.

When the Puritans and other settlers first came to America in the 1600s they desired the freedom to practice their religions without interference from the government or persecution from other citizens. Today, these issues are still very much alive. Please read the article and provide a response. Your response should be significant enough in length to develop a sound statement (no less than a solid paragraph or two).

\nSome questions to consider:
\nDo we have religious freedom in the United States today, as the first settlers desired?
\nAre some religions more widely accepted by society than others?
\nDo you believe that it is appropriate or not to build a faith-based center at Ground Zero?
